I did free giveaways earlier on, but ended up giving a lot of free books away that never came back in the form of reviews. We didn't give away free stuff at the stores, of course, but there was always some sale or promotion going on. That was always more likely to draw customers in, even if they hadn't been intending to spend any money. So I agree that pricing your first e-book at a low price or giving it away for free is more likely to make people notice and want to read your book; it's a good idea.
