How can writers help?
Here are a few opportunities...
1. Kate Messner and Kid-Lit Cares: Superstorm Sandy Relief Effort
From Kate's web site:
What is KidLit Cares?
It’s an online talent auction to benefit the Red Cross relief effort for Sandy. Agents, editors, authors, and illustrators have donated various services to be auctioned off to the highest bidder, with donations being made directly to the Red Cross disaster relief fund.
Click here for more details, and for a list of all the amazing items up for auction. Guys, there's a lot of great stuff there for writers.
2. Not that we're geeks or anything, but Wired.com/GeekMom had 6 Ways for Geeks to Help with Hurricane Sandy Relief.
3. Donate directly to the Red Cross--Click here to donate online, or you can text the word REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation.
The full damage, physical and emotional, has yet to be tallied, and it's heartbreaking to see these folks suffering. For those of you who were affected by the storm, just know that a whole lot of people are praying for you.
Were you, or anyone you know, affected by Hurricane Sandy? Do you know of other ways we can help? Please share in the comments, and if possible, add links. Thank you!
Sandy missed our state, thank God. Some great ways to donate there. We usually give to the Red Cross. With the economy the way it's been the past few years, it's difficult for them to help as many people since donations are down.
ReplyDeleteAlex, I'm so glad your state was spared. Red Cross is usually my go-to donation as well. I love how easy they've made it with texting.
Deletethose are nice ideas for help.
ReplyDeleteI'm only sad that western media informs only about the devastation in US and nothing about all the really poor people who were hit by Sandy on Cuba and on other poor islands and countries :(
Hope all the victims of Sandy will find help soon.
Dez, excellent point. I heard a little bit about Cuba and Haiti, but not that much. Sad times for a lot of people.
DeleteThanks for info. on how we can be a part of the healing conversation.
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by, Leslie
DeleteI'm so inspired by how the kid lit writing community pulls together. Thanks for posting these opportunities, Julie !
ReplyDeleteMichelle, I totally agree. Kate Messner was on it right away!
DeleteRed Cross is our standby charity everytime.
ReplyDeleteUs too, Nancy. It seems the best way to help, especially for those of us who live far away
DeleteWe donated to the Red Cross last week. The devastation is incredible. The writing community always steps up, doesn't it? Amazing!! :)
ReplyDeleteJemi, the writing community is so generous. It amazes me all the time.
DeleteThanks for these links, Julie. I don't know anyone who was personally affected, but I'm so glad that there are many ways to help!
ReplyDeleteOh, thanks for sharing these! Good to have some ways to not feel so helpless.
ReplyDeleteIt's great that there are a variety of ways in which to assist.
ReplyDeleteI really feel for those who have experienced major loss.
I've donated to the Red Cross for several disaster relief funds. Here's one more disaster, unfortunately. Thanks for gathering this information here in one spot for writers to access.
ReplyDeleteThe talent auctions seem to work so well, but they are all great ways to help.
ReplyDeleteThe power of nature can be truly amazing and devastating.
In addition to Kate's great auction, Jen Malone has a fantastic one too!
