Your Funny Father's Day Story

"A truly rich man is one whose children run into his arms when his hands are empty"
-unknown

My dad died five years ago, but here are some funny things I remember about him:

When he took his black dress socks off, he rubbed them between his toes.

He wore this horrible apple tie to church. Decorated with partially eaten apples, it was the worst tie ever made.

Telling us "Pull my finger" never got old (at least for him).

To all those wonderful dads out there who are creating fond memories with their kids, I wish you a happy Father's Day.

Do you have a funny dad story? I'd love to hear it!

  1. Thanks for sharing. I still have my dad. I'll see him tomorrow at my kid's baseball game. Your post reminds me to enjoy the moments while we have the opportunity. ;)

And, what is with the pull my finger and guys? ;)

  4. Naomi, I didn't realize Australia celebrated Father's Day in September. As for pulling the finger, it must be worldwide!

  5. Over here in Aotearoa New Zealand we also celebrate Father's Day in September. I'm so lucky to still have both my Mum and Dad in my life. Dad is a real old 'bah-humbug'. Bad news is Dad's delight! But he's a total softie who'll carefully rescue a spider (no matter how scary) from the bath and gently put it out the window or onto a leaf. He loves it when the grandkids visit, and when he renovated the house years ago he made sure the counter tops, door handles and light switches were all at the right height for my shortie Mum. Thanks for reminding me that my parents are treasures.

  7. Leigh, the story of your dad making things in the house shorter for you mom is adorable! I love how he embraced her "petiteness".

Carole Anne, I didn't truly appreciate my dad until later in life, but I'm glad I finally saw the light.

  12. My dad has done many funny things. I think this sums him up though: My kids played Monopoly w/their friend the other day and I hear my son from the other room "You know, our Grandpa is allergic to losing." Yes, he actually convinced them of that.

  13. Lisa, I think my brother in law shares the same allergy as your father. That's funny!

  14. Hahaha...those were great!

My dad used to get up really early every morning 4:30 ish. As a result, he would fall asleep in the afternoon on the weekends or after dinner during the week. We used to put butter on his glasses so he'd wake up and not be able to see anything. Or we'd tie his work boots together.

One time, while he was napping we noticed he had a hole in his sock so we got some red glitter nail polish (do you know how hard that is to get off?) and painted his toe nail for him. We snickered for hours and then days and finally we couldn't take it anymore...we asked what he thought of it. Joke was on us because he found it right away and scraped it off and sat around listening to us make fun of him for days!

  16. I have a hard time on FD's because I still miss my dad as if he left yesterday . . . well, more actually. His special fun thing was to sing while he cooked and I still enter my family home hearing him sing and wishing I could smell his pasta.

  18. Sorry about your dad. Makes for a difficult holiday in some moments, I'm sure.

My dad loved the elephant under the chair trick rather than the pull my finger thing. But those dads sure love their flatulence jokes, don't they? :o)

So glad I found your blog, Julie! It's gorgeous.

  19. Siana's dad has his own blog - just check it out to catch some laughs - he call's himself the Old dude in the desert (http://www.olddudeinthedesert.com).

Tricia's dad is no longer here, but one of her best memories is thinking that the entire musical of Fiddler on the Roof was about her, as her dad would sing "Tradition" but say "Tricia" instead ;)

    Happy Father's Day!

  20. Jackee, love the elephant under the chair! That's funny.

2 girls, I'm going to check out the old dude in the desert right now. And I love Tricia's dad sung that song to her. That's so sweet.

  21. I love that quote! My Dad used to stomp around the house going "Fi Fi Fo Fum!" like a giant. It always made me scream and giggle.

  22. Margo, I love the fi fi fo fum story! That's priceless.

  23. Sorry your dad is no longer with you physically, but I know he and the memories you shared together holds a special place in your heart.

I just love the apple tie at church! My dad has the craziest ties, too. Some (thanks to my mom hiding them) will never see the light of day.

  24. Tory, yes, it's sometimes the wives job to keep the ugly stuff hidden from their husbands!
