Is anyone else out there?

Knock, knock, knock...

Is anyone else out there in the blogosphere? Am I the only writer not at the SCBWI conference in Los Angeles?

I wasn't able to attend the conference. I feel like the head-gear-wearing teen who's stuck at home, while all the pretty people are at the prom. Boo hoo.

How will I handle this disappointment? I'll make excellent use of my time. I'm progressing on my wip, sending queries, and keeping up with the conference through their blog. It's not the same as being there in person, but Plan B will be quite productive.

And now for some fun: over at the Restless Writers blog, they supplied a link to "I Write Like." Simply paste a paragraph from your work and it'll analyze it for you. It said I write like Stephen King. If only!

Tell me, are you missing the conference, too?

And if you pop over to I Write Like, be sure and tell us what famous writer you write like!

  2. Julie, there there, now! Don't fret. I'm home, too, while Martina's meeting all our blogosphere friends. I'm watching Real Housewives of NJ, which probably doesn't count as making great use of my time :) Good luck with your productive projects. Maybe I'll follow your lead!

    Sending you hugs!
    Marissa :)

  3. Kris, nice to know I'm not the only one!

Marissa, I know! Martina will meet up with Lisa and everyone else from my critique group. I'm sure they'll have lots of good information to share.

  4. I did the I Write Like a couple weeks back. Here's my link: http://365-days-of-novel-writing.blogspot.com/2010/07/who-do-you-write-like.html

I've never read one of his books...guess I should now. ;)

  5. J., I read your post. I write like sure was fun, even if it's not very accurate!

  6. HiJulie,
I wrote a similar blog about all the sparkly people at the RWA conference in Orlando.

I've been enjoying reading the tips/advice from the SCBWI blog.

    Good luck with your goals.

  7. I'm not there either *sigh*

That site said I write like King too (my ms) - for my blog it said I write like Margaret Atwood. :)

  8. Hi Julie - well, I'm over here in NZ so not at a conference in your lovely land. I'm just stopping by to say 'Hi'. I did the 'I write like' thing a week or so ago - but I forget who I write like! (actually, I hope it's just me).

  9. Hi Julie,

The site stated I write as though I can't read, construct a sentence, am a consummate cheat, and a foul-mouthed wretch, similar in nature to Titus Oates!

I'm not at the conference either, which is a major plus for the organizers and attendees.

Nevertheless, I'm at home, looking after my two granddaughters, Rebecca (born permanently a month ago weighting 4 pounds 4 ounces), and Aimee (four years old) who provide me with enough joy, laughter, tenderness, emotion, truth, to sustain my absence from corporate & professional events which tend to be a tad boring, at times, depending on whom is in attendance.

    With best wishes,
    Ronnie

  10. Woohoo!! This conference is the BEST EVER!!! He he he. Just kidding. Well, maybe not. But I'll just have to debrief you later. :D I'm missing all you guys that didn't make it. There will always be more chances in the future and it sure sounds like you're being productive.

  11. Sorry you couldn't go.

I've never been to LA, let alone the conference. I went to the NY one 1x, and have been the the New England one four times.

  12. Is it me, or is Lisa taunting me from SCBWI in LA? Now she's on my list! *stink eye to Lisa*

MaryC, Jemi, Leigh, Ronnie, and Theresa, thanks for stopping by. I'm not wallowing in sadness. Promise. *sheds tears*

  13. I'm out here. But sometimes it does seem as if sometimes in your blog that you are playing to an empty house.

I wish you luck in your WIP and success in your publishing dreams. Come visit me at my blog, will you? It's lonely out here. Roland

  14. I love that site "I Write Like". I get a different answer each time I submit a different paragraph. What does that mean?

  15. I didn’t get to go to SCBWI either! But hey, we're home writing our next book while everyone else is off playing. I think I'm going to plan on going next year though!

  16. I'm here too:-( Sadly, I wrote a SUPER long blog post as therapy. Trying to keep my mind off of missing all of the cool stuff going on (and all of the awesome connections being made!) Take heart, we're all in this together!

  17. You're not alone...unfortunately I'm not there either. I'll keep my fingers crossed that we'll both be there next year. I'd love to meet you in person! :)

  18. Roland, I'm off to visit you now! You are NOT playing to an empty house, I assure you.

Aubrie, I only tried I write like one time. I should do it with a different paragraph, just for fun.

Heather, I'm hoping I can go next year also. If so, we'll meet in person!

Lindsay, I agree. Keeping up with the blog posts helps, although it's just not the same.

Amy, meeting in person next year would be awesome. Plus, you'll have your awesome book in print!

  19. I didn't go. It sure would have been neat though (understatement). I'm having fun catching up on blogs though. ;)

  20. MT, catching up on blogs is a fun alternative! There's always next year...

  21. I'm sorry you didn't make it. At least you're able to read the blog and touch base with some of the folks who made it.

I've given you an award over at my blog. Don't worry about passing it on if awards aren't your thing. Just consider it a shout-out for your blog.

  22. I was sad that everyone here in Orlando went to the RWA conference and I didn't go!

  23. Terri, I'm sorry you weren't able to make it to RWA. Hopefully you got good stuff on their blog and from tweets!

  24. I wasn't there either but I was off of the interwebs. :P

  25. I'm going to be a sad puppy when ACFW conference rolls around. But M&M's and magazines will help. :) I need to take that you write like quiz. Looks fun!

  26. Julie..all my Facebook writing friends in America
attended the conference and posted comments and updated their status, increasing my jealousy. Living in India I was unable to attend. So I had to read about them gloating.
Its okay, you and I made decent progress on our WIP. Well..there is always a next time.

  27. Palindrome, yes, it's the next best thing!

Jill, M&M's...the cure to all that ails us. And yes, that I Write Like is fun!

Rachna, that's the silver lining, right? Getting work done is a great thing.
